About Cakes
Spend time deciding on what sort of cake you would like before considering your supplier. Do you want to have wedding cake tiers created with pillars and columns, or one cake tier stacked on top of each other. If you wish to have a flat cake, will this be in a particular shape, or spell out your initials, or create a word? There are plenty of specialist books and wedding magazines dedicated to wedding cakes. So take a good look at designs first. Once you have a general idea of what you want, the ask some baker's to provide you with their portfolios. Wedding Fairs are a good place to get to know wedding cake makers, and to actually see a live version of their designs.
Lots of brides are now choosing something different from a traditional cake and icing, incorporating the theme and colours of the wedding into the design of the cake. Chocolate covered cakes and vibrant coloured icing are becoming more and more popular. Individual wedding cup cakes can be fun and uniquely made for you. Handcrafted sugar designs and toppers are in abundance. It seems anything you want can be made to go on top of the wedding cake.
So what sort of filling options are there for wedding cakes and what will you decide for your cake? Think about whether you want to keep the cake for the future. Popular fillings are carrot cake, chocolate, sponge with jam, buttercream, mousse as well as the traditional fruit cake. You can have different flavours and cakes for each tier.
Do match your cake that reflects you as a couple and your style of wedding. Theme the cake with your wedding gown, or bridesmaids colour of dress, flowers, invitations. Be creative and remember these creations may take upto six months to achieve.
Wedding cake designers now have the most amazing designs - a beautiful three-tier wedding cake designed as a hat. Heart shaped individual cakes, tied with ribbon and bows and cup cakes in their own individually designed cases.
There are some incredible designs out there individually designed for the bride and groom. Cake toppers are becoming very popular too, where you could have a mini replica of the happy couple, fresh flowers, sugar flowers, petals, endless designs! Wedding cakes are a way of expressing your own individual tastes and personalility and you can have a cake designed to fit in with your own interests. I have seen 4ft high cakes covered in white chocolate of swirls and roses, a cake made of edible feathers (rice paper) and hand-painted cakes.
Most venues will provide a cake stand for your cake, but do check that it is suitable first. Your cake maker will also be able to provide a stand for you.
The cutting of the cake is traditionally done by the bride placing her hand over the groom's whilst they cut into the cake, usually with a silver knife, but I have seen this done with a sword! Traditionally the lower tier of the cake is cut into sections for the guests to enjoy at the wedding, and the top tier would be kept as a christening cake. However, as most cakes now are made of sponge, this isn't always the case, and the christening may have already taken place.
Do visit several wedding cake makers before making your final choice, have a budget and compare portfolios of their work. The more popular the cake maker the earlier you will need to engage their services.
